He was the managing editor of Newton, the immensely popular science magazine in Japan for 20 years, since the time of the first issue in 1981. Keine schuppigen, grau-grünen Riesen-Eidechsen, sondern gefiederte, teils Papageien-bunte Dinosaurier bevölkern diesen Bildband. Faszinierend und brillant!Das Buch beinhaltet Werke von Luis V. Rey, Zhao Chuang, James Kuether, Davide Bonadonna, Sergey Krasovinsky, Rodolfo Nogueira, Masato Hattori, Emily Willoughby und Raúl MartÃn.Jeder dieser Personen wird ein Kapitel gewidmet, mit jeweils gleichem Aufbau. Nach einem kurzen Absatz zur Biografie, kommt der Künstler selbst zu Wort. Dann folgen die Bilder. Diese sind meistens einseitig, mit Informationstext zum Namen des Dinosauriers, Art der Bilderstellung und kurzem Beschreibungstext. Einige zweiseitige Bilder sind auch vorhanden.Viele der Bilder wurden am Computer erstellt (2D-Zeichnung oder 3D-Modellierung), Malerei findet aber auch heute noch ihren Platz.Im abschließenden Kapitel „A Persistent Sense of Wonder“ betrachten Paläontologe Makoto Manabe und Herausgeber Kazou Terakado in Form eines Gesprächs die Entwicklung der Dinosaurier-Darstellungen anhand ausgewählter Werke seit dem 19. Jahrhundert.Was dieses Buch nicht ist? Ein Dinosaurier-Lexikon. Außer dem Namen erhält man äußerst wenig Informationen über die dargestellten Dinosaurier. (Klar, man kann googeln - Es wäre möglich dies schöner zu lösen, z.B. mit QR-Code).Ebenso erfolgte die Auswahl der Bilder selbst wohl eher nach visuellen Kriterien, nicht um einen Ãœberblick über Arten oder Zeitalter zu bieten. Auf Publikums-Lieblinge wie Velociraptor oder T-Rex muss natürlich trotzdem keiner verzichten.Kleinere Mängel:Die Angabe des Zeitalters ist teilweise nicht vorhanden, obwohl sie auf dem Klappentext versprochen wird.Ein Index aller abgebildeten Arten wäre sinnvoll gewesen.Einige wenige Abbildungen enthalten mehr als zwei Arten. Die Zuordnung der genannten Namen ist dem Laien dann unmöglich.Bei einer Abbildung wurde eine Skalen-Angabe nicht aus dem Chinesischen übersetzt (soll wohl „cm“ heißen).
